Minimalism is very popular at the moment and for great reason if you ask me. I’ve been living a more minimal and essential lifestyle for the past year and I can’t explain how much it’s helped me. Living with less decreases the amount of decisions you have to make and frees up time and energy – something we all crave. Essentialism is a form of minimalism, but instead of focusing on how to live with less, you learn to identify what’s necessary – regardless of quantity.
Pareto's law - or the 80/20 rule as many of you may know it states – ‘80% of your results will come from 20% of the work’. Pareto’s law is about identifying which actions or habits, yield most of your results – Pareto’s law is essentialism, essentialism is Pareto’s law.
But, where most seem to go wrong with this and ultimately miss seem to miss the point, is by ignoring the work that hasn’t yielded the most results – since this is where the biggest lessons lay. For instance, blogging is essential for my business as it not only brings people to my website, but gives me the platform I need to tell my story, collect my thought and develop my ideas and beliefs. Workout videos on the hand aren’t essential (not at the moment anyway), but without having gone down this path I’d never would have known this, and ultimately left a stone unturned which could have yielded even greater results.
Living a more minimalist lifestyle can help free up your time and energy, whilst essentialism can help you maximise it – but we must learn each endeavour. There are many aspects to our lives - family, work, our happiness, goals, etc - all of which need our attention. But, if we can’t identify what’s essential in each stage of our day/week/month/life, then we’ll find it hard to reach our true potential.
We don’t need to be doing as much as we think, but we must first identify what is essential so that what we do, has the biggest impact on our lives.
